I'm curious to know what you guys think about Sam Shields playing in the NFL?

You guys think he has potential at the next level? He has started every game this year and while he’s had his ups and downs, his problems are all fixable with proper coaching and more expirience at his new position. His technique is terrible but that isn’t something you can’t fix. What you can’t change is size and speed! 6’1, 190 Ibs and a 4.2 forty time. Very athletic. Will probably take one or two years of developement, but he could turn out to be a major steal! Am I the only one that see’s this?

I don't see it

At all. Sam will certainly get a look after he wows the scouts with his 40 time (if he doesn’t run a great 40 he won’t get a look at all) and may end up in training camp somewhere but there’s no way he makes a team.

He can’t cover college wideouts right now, so why would he be able to cover NFL wideouts? Every WR in the NFL was the best on his team in college.

Brandon Harris is your future NFL CB.

Again, it's his first year at corner. All his problems (like technique and reading routes) are fixable with coaching and gaining expirience.

He has all the physical tools and is extremely fast (4.2 forty time). He’s a pretty good tackler too. And considering he used to be a wide out, he could develop great ball skills. He’s shown flashes. Come on, he’s starting opposite Brandon Harris in his first year at a new position. I’m not saying he’s Sean Smith or anything, I’m just saying he has a shot as a 6th or 7th rounder with the potential to turn into a nice #3 or #2 at the next level (with coaching and development. And he’s an excellent special teamer.

By the way, I think Harris is a freak of nature. I think he’s the best DB at the U since Sean Taylor. I think he has a legit shot at being a top 10 pick when he declares. He’s going to be an All-American this season as a sophomore! Obviously teams are going to target Shields over passing the ball Brandon’s way.

Naw...Im not quite ready to crown him as a possible 3rd tier NFL CB

True most of his deficiencies are coachable, but it just seems like he so lost out there sometimes. I am not sure he can grasp the defensive game while also perfecting his technique and instinct to find and defend the pass. I would say he is at least two years maybe three years from being a decent CB and during that type he will be competing with all-conference studs coming out of college. I really think they hurt him by not moving him over to CB sooner in his college career. Its kinda like he is in the middle of nowhere right now. I sure hope Im wrong though.

I don't see it either

Dude is an albatross right now. I don’t see that improving. A shame he was never able to build on his freshman season, but c est la vie. I have yet to see a play this year where he is not in the wrong position, taking a bad route, etc. He’s been able to overcome some of that with his speed, but in the NFL, that speed won’t be such an asset.
Harris looks like a future stud. As far as CB’s go, he kinda reminds me of Ryan McNeil. I’ve enjoyed watching his development.

I blame this on the coaching staff. They moved him to corner much too late.

Had he switched positions last season, he might have been at a whole other level.

shields will get drafted.

he runs a 4.2, he’s got a knack for getting downfield on kick coverage, he’s not afraid to hit people, he can line up at receiver and he can line up at corner. assuming he doesn’t shit the bed at the combine, someone will take a flier on him in the later rounds.

I agree....

Shields will have great work out numbers at the combine. And I think u guys are missing out on something about the NFL, the practice squad. U guys r right that right now he isn’t a pro CB, but give him a year or 2 of seasoning and he could be a beast. So some team will take a late round flier on him and hide him on the practice squad for a year or two. U’ll already be getting a pro caliber special teamer off the break, he just needs technique work.
