Cannon Smith and Taylor Cook Transferring
Apparent 4th string QB Cannon Smith asked for his release and it was granted. From all accounts, the rising junior could not fend off RSF Taylor Cook and F A.J. Highsmith for the backup spot and found himself at the bottom of the depth chart. Good luck, kid.
And now news comes that Taylor Cook is out, as well.
Okay, Smith makes sense. Whatever. Cook? What the HELL?``Yes, Ma'am, it's true,'' said 6-7, 235-pound redshirt freshman Taylor Cook, who was named the backup to Jacory Harris after spring football. UM coach Randy Shannon told reporters Monday, however, that all three backups were still battling for the No. 2 spot.
Cook is from the tiny farming town of Eagle Lake, Texas.
``I'm just going back home to play some football. If I go to a Division I-AA school, I can play right away. If I go to another Division IA school, I have to sit out another two semesters.
``Yes, I got my release. I made a decision and I'm sticking with it.''

I think it's more telling
That the news comes a day after Shannon essentially declared Cook lost the no. 2 spot.
Smith was never going to play here; it’s almost unrelated.
