this o-line class, the more I look at it, could be amazing

esp considering that
we still have two 4-star prospects - ben jones & jermaine johnson -- who haven’t played yet. plus, brandon washington. so, yeah.

From a commenter elsewhere:
The class is great. To me great is defined by grabbing and getting who we targeted. Yes, a few “got away” but every school has a few get away.
To some of miami’s wonderful fans it’s all about getting the kids that eveyone else wanted. Well…
Take a look at little 3 star Payne’s offer list.
Storms… Linders.
We have kids everyone wanted.
But more importantly we got kids that are driven, mentaly tough and explosive – they play BBall, right? ;-) Sure hope they can all dunk.
Anyway, You guys still don’t understand that on a day like today the only real dissapointment was Henderson. Because he is so talented and at a position we really couldve used.
But that’s ONE kid.
No one defected. All our commitments signed and these kids are ready to compete.
Not like McCartney.
For me, this is a sad day only cuz I see how uneducated and nasty this fanbase is. They don’t understand that you really can dig up a team full of Santana Moss’s and Ed Reeds and win…
More than that, this fan base is so caught up in the ritual of “winning” an 18 yr old’s signature that they forget Miami went that rout and FAILED.
With a roster FULL of 4-5 star kids they got trucked by LSU 40-3.
With a roster FULL of 4-5 star kids they went 6-6 in 2006.
A roster full of 4-5 star kids don’t work here. Those kids want hand outs and favors and pats on the back – then they play like world beaters.
Here they get a half full stadium, less than impressive work out facilities and someone letting them know they ain’t sh*t till they DO something.
Kevin Nelson will thrive here.
Alan Hurns will thrive here.
Travis Williams will thrive here.
They aren’t looking for favors.
They don’t care about pretty.
They know they ain’t sh*t until Ray, Clint, Mike and Tez say they are.
Randy knows the type of kids he wants.
The fans don’t want them until these TD’s, picks and sacks.
The problem is Randy needs to win so that all of this looks like a painting.
Right now there are lots of dots like in a Monet and everyone has their faces pressed right up against, disecting it, remarking at the colors and patterns – needing to take a step back to see the masterpiece unfolding.
5-7, 7-5, 9-4…what’s next?
Recruiting is the life blood of the program. I am NOT saying 5 star kids are all punks. I am NOT saying 5 star kids aren’t worth having or that they’ll all fail.
What I am saying is TODAY’s 5 star kid has high expectations for what the fans, the school and the community will do for THEM.
That works at USC. That works at UF.
That don’t work here. It didn’t when Coker was trying to pull a USC and won’t work now under Randy.
Miami is a VERY different place boys and girls.
Randy is doing the right things…little by little.
No one cared how much time was put in before Howard or during Howards time.
Jimmy had a built in recipe and followed it to a T.
Same with Dennis.
Butch recruiited like a ninja and his staff mined kids like no ones business, but…
The Internet came.
Trust me, if the Internet was the INTERNET when Portis was coming out or when Irvin was playing HS you probably wouldn’t have seen them in a Miami uniform. Their personalities would have exploded and gone the way of half the other big heads out there in the game today.
Can you imagine Clint with a spotlight and a microphone at 18??!!!
My god.
Anyway, 2010 is here. BCS time. This is it.
Juniors and Sophs, with better backups and a full roster of PLAYERS. This is going to be a good season.
Just wait…

damn
that’s a good ass post. i think it’s worth pointing out that when you look at the 08 class, aside from brandon harris and arguably futch & ramon (those two are potential anyway), the biggest contributors have been guys like jacory (no major offer besides oregon) & laron (no sec offer iirc) & thearon/benji (two least heralded WRs). forston could still be a beast, but he came back out of shape. we all know about arthur. manny said that aldarious has been lazy. i think there’s definitely a grain of salt to what he’s saying in that post. the staff definitely has to put their money where their mouth is (not in the lsu way) & develop these kids.
the idea of clinton portis having twitter while in college is making me salivate tbh. (and it’s funny that he doesn’t even mention that the only reason we got clinton is because UF didn’t want him to play RB.)

Yeah, he's got a point.
We’ve done the all five-stars thing. It was shit. There’s a thoughtful, pointed medium that I think good evaluation can get us.
It’s funny that even Jimmy Johnson brought that point up the other day — our best guys having been ranked low and barely wanted — and yet fans who speak of him like the god he is complain left and right. Of course, they also complain we’re small and weak, but hate this class of big-bodied boys. You just can’t win sometimes.
Re: development, that’s a beef I think carries weight (Jimmy Graham being a good counter). But in some cases — maybe like Aldarius’ — the kid has to really want it or it doesn’t matter what coaching you have. He’s no excuse for running slow and sloppy routes. Same as Glenn Cook had no business having tits, though he’d have been terrible even fit. That’s on them. It’s interesting to me that Randy made a point to talk about kids relying on what they did in high school, and also to talk about inner drive. Coaching matters, but it was clear in the Wisconsin game there were a lot of people on the field who just didn’t want to be there. Fortunately most of them are graduating out.

yeah, ever since day 1
he’s been talking about flushing those guys out. and i think the younger guys are rubbing off on the older ones. i don’t think it’s a coincidence that after brandon harris came in, demarcus van dyke suddenly became a corner who seems to relish tackling. & yeah re development, it’s hard to argue both with how guys like laron & regis & thearon have developed and, uh, every miami defender in the NFL that played here when randy was d coordinator.

and yeahs ometimes the light just has to come on
like, leonard hankerson started to take his career seriously this year & went from someone who was about to get swallowed up by a bunch of younger WRs to possibly the best WR that we’ve had here since andre johnson
