Offensive Explosion! (Or, How the Spring Game Skewed Perceptions)

I had the good fortune to grab a front row seat at the pathetic quaint Traz Powell Stadium on Saturday to watch the Hurricanes go at it during the annual Spring Game.  And while I stayed through the bitter end and made sure my photographer got all the moneyshots, I couldn't do a proper "post-game" round up like Manny and Shandel (OFFENSE!!!  SCORING!!! BAD DEFENSE!!!), so you get to re-live the hype now.

So what do I make of what I saw?

NOTE, YOU CAN CLICK EVERY PICTURE IN THIS POST FOR A FULLSCREEN VIEW, BECAUSE DAN, MY PHOTOGRAPHER, IS A BADASS).

_mg_1250_medium  It's all about the U.

Well, there's good and bad.

Star-divide

The Good

(1) The wideouts looked very good, going after balls instead of waiting on them, making sharp cuts, and outrunning the defense (which will be part of The Bad). Plus they put up ridiculous numbers (check out Manny for the stats). So what do great catches look like?

_mg_1376_medium

Aldarius taking it from #38 Cory Nelms.

(2) The defensive line was getting pressure both in the passing game (pressuring the QB's out of the pocket, forcing throws on the run) and wreaking havoc on the RB's.

_mg_1288_medium

Allen Bailey giving it to A.J. Highsmith.

_mg_1350_medium

Highsmith being hit on release.

_mg_1499_medium

Olivier Vernon (yeah, number changes) chasing down Spencer Whipple.

Even Colin McCarthy got in on the action and picked off a pass

_mg_1420_medium

Look at those hands!

The Bad

(1) The secondary was getting eaten alive (at times) by a trio of back-ups that didn't impress me as much as they did a lot of other people.  But, and this is probably more indicative of why the DB's were having so many problems, you have to consider who was not suited up: Brandon Harris, Ramon Buchanon, Ryan Hill, and JoJo Nicolas.  That's a lot of talent in the secondary that didn't play.  Personally, I think the big numbers were because the main DB's playing were: Vaughn Telemaque (who held his own), Brandon McGee, DVD (who did get burned a few times), Ray Ray, Cory Nelms, Jared Campbell, and Jamal Reid.  So that's a total of 7 DB's who had to play every single snap of the entire spring game. (I may have missed a walk-on or so, but still, these guys had to play every play of the game, see how you feel).

(2) The quarterback play.  Yeah, there were big passing numbers and big plays.  But what I saw was this:

_mg_1282_medium

That's a fumble. By Spencer Whipple. On the first play of the game.

_mg_1287_medium

Bailey chasing down Highsmith (which resulted in the big hit above).

Morris and Highsmith rarely stayed in the pocket if they had the choice (and this was even if they weren't being chased out of the pocket).  I can probably count on one hand the amount of times that Stephen Morris hung in the pocket and looked past the first receiver. Most of the time he saw if the first receiver was covered and then took off scrambling and threw on the run or tried to take it himself. He didn't make too many reads, and had a tendency to stare.  But then again, he did just graduate high school 3 months ago, so I'll cut him a break.

Back to the problems with throwing on the run: on the 11th offensive series, Stephen Morris was scrambling, tried to throw on the run, threw a tipped pass that was ultimately picked by Ray Ray; then in the next offensive series, Highsmith was rolling to his left and proceeded to throw the pick to McCarthy (above).

My boy Spencer didn't do too hot overall, though he did have a big pass or two.  Personally, I think it may be a mechanics thing:

_mg_1298_medium

Possibly why he fumbled on the first play, though this shot is from later in the game.

(3) The running backs were less than exciting (and again, it very may have been the O-Line problems).  Damien Berry didn't do too much (but he didn't get a ton of carries either), though he did front a poster-worthy stiff-arm:

_mg_1514_medium

Kylan Robinson getting ready to take it in the face.

If not for a 51 yard run by Mike James, a 20 yard break by Lamar Miller before he went down, and one big run by Berry, the running backs didn't really produce (but also, Lee Chambers was out injured too).  Maybe 2 or 3 yard runs average per back if you subtract the big runs.

Storm also didn't live up to his name, though towards the end he did have a good run where he put on some moves.

  _mg_1545_medium

Storm, stopping from a full sprint. (Look at how good those pictures are, you can see the fake turf pebbles flying up.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic, but I saw some to be excited about, but more to be worried about.  And I didn't even get into the offensive line.  I don't agree with Manny that the O-Line looked better (take into account Joel Figueroa didn't play either).  Furthermore, for many of the series, Stephen Morris did play behind an all freshman offensive line (Shane McDermott, Cory White, Jared Wheeler, Stephen Plein, Malcolm Bunche) (recognize a single name on the list?).

The Rest

That's really my breakdown.  I'm going to end with a few choice pictures, but rest assured, tomorrow I'm going to give you a post of nothing but visual goodness with about another 60-70 pictures with my outstanding captions.

_mg_1182_medium

God, Allen Bailey is HUGE.

_mg_1391_medium

Randy, you're looking both worried and grey. Or constipated.

_mg_1474_medium

Injured Matt Bosher, hard at work on the sidelines.

Let me know what you thought about the game, but I don't want to hear how much better these pictures are than the ones I took at the Under Armour Combine.  Make sure to come back tomorrow to see the rest of the pure, unadulterated pictures.  They'll include more action shots, warm-ups, JACORY THROWING PASSES, NFL Canes on the sideline, crazy-ass fans, and cheerleaders(!).

He is 5’7" 180 lbs and was covering benjamin the entire game. :\

Benjamin is 5'10, 175 on paper...

Meaning he’s closer to 5’8", 160. Size didn’t matter, it was pure speed on that match-up

- i think really that the DB play isn’t that worrisome. i mean, leonard hankerson (a senior) should be dominating someone like brandon mcgee, who is a sophomore who barely played last year (altho i do have to say that i’m scared that brandon is dvd pt 2, i.e. a guy who is physically exactly what you would want in a corner but can’t cover anyone). DVD getting burned is obv not a new thing, and i think he’ll prob be the weak link in the defense next year (i’ve never not seen DVD interfere with a WR, even if it doesn’t get called), but reports are saying that he’s putting in work this year, so who knows. otherwise cory nelms & the other walk on named gholston (#39) should be getting torched by benjamin and aldarius. those are guys we expect to be nfl-caliber players a la our WRs of old, so it would be really troubling to me if benjamin didn’t clobber them.

- the RBs have been doing this two yard carry, three yard carry, two yard carry, 45 yard run thing all spring it seems like (i didn’t catch who missed the tackle on the mike james run, it looked like josh holmes). i think the running game will be hardest to decipher right now because of how hurt/unsettled both the O-line & LBs are. it’s nice to know that there is big play ability there though.

- the O-line def improved from the last scrimmage, at least stat wise. i think the sack numbers were kind of combated by the QBs rolling out a lot more this time, but they still went down. jermaine johnson looked huge and awesome in the video i saw. we’ll see what happens with the O-line, but we’re definitely infusing talent, and i’m wiling to bet that it will shake itself out as a net positive (i.e. ben jones is going to be better than pipho, no doubt). in the D-line vs O-line battle, v much like the WR vs CB battle, i think the right unit dominated. allen bailey should not be getting blocked, and guys like olivier vernon should be getting in the backfield.

A quick response

1 – DBS – DVD’s doing track now, so if he’s working on football, it’s outside of practice/scrimmage situations. Also, I tend to agree about the DB’s, because so many guys were missing.

2 – RB’s – This worries me more. Berry isn’t going to maintain his career 6.8 yards a carry (or whatever it is) once he gets 20-25 carries a game. I just hope the big plays aren’t a function of a thin LB core coupled with an aggressive pass rush from the D-Line.

3 – OL – I’ll believe they’re better when I see it. I haven’t had a ton of faith in a Miami offensive line since before Sherko Haji-Rasouli left. (Yeah, I pulled the Sherko card…maybe I should do a story on him…)

LOL btw I was channelsurfing last night and came across Dancing with Stars at the end to you see your gf, Erin Andrews do the gator chomp. Maybe that’s why my friend calls her “Trev Andrews”

That would bring her down a bunch of notches…
I catch her doing a gator chomp again, were through!!

Nice job APDB. You are not pessimistic, to me you are keeping it real. Our O-Line and D-Lines have struggled in the past. If the D-Line can get penetration, then the DB’s will play better and not have to try and pick up that slack. And if the O-line can protect and not get J12 killed this year, that will be an improvement. We will know after game 2 this year how we stack up.

Great post!

I think your perspective is refreshing. The news everywhere else was that the spring game somehow solidified us as national contenders (or at least that’s how everyone feels). I wasn’t at the game but I didn’t quite buy it as I’m fully aware of how we Canes fans just love or really want to drink the NC kool-aid (which is understandable given our history and the ten year separation from when we last lived up to that history).

The QBs running out of the pocket is a serious problem as Jacory isn’t that mobile (at least not like Highsmith and Morris). This reflects our #1 weakness last year and the reason we weren’t a top 10 team last year—weakness along the offensive line.

We desperately need to improve the OL. If we fix the OL and hold everything else constant, even the questionable secondary, we become a BCS team. If we fix both of those, we become nearly unstoppable (think UM 2001) and an obvious national title contender.

GO CANES!!!

It's not so much the Secondary is questionable...

I think a big part of Saturday was simply depth. With only 8-9 DB’s available, they were playing almost every defensive snap for their respective “team” in the scrimmage.

by Apdirtybird on Mar 31, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

it will be interesting to see how the secondary shakes out when the rest of the recruits come in and if any of them end up seeing the field at all (i doubt it)

BTW...

Bailey’s arm (I think that’s his arm—it has to be!) looks like a damn anaconda wrapped around a frightful and helpless Highsmith. What a manbeast!!!

Also, I totally agree that Whipple’s mechanics are a little weird. They kinda remind me of Tebow, which can’t be good.

Love the captions BTW—keep them coming! GO CANES!!!

A Sherko reference? STRONG work my friend. I hope someone on this website is keeping a running “obscure canes reference” tally.
