The Post-Game Thread Reclines Momentarily
In the comments of the game thread, I said that something would have gone terribly wrong if we didn't win last night's game by more than 10 points. Well, we won by 28, but I wouldn't say that everything went terribly right. I'm pretty sure that's good news. Again, pretty sure.
One of the frustrating things about college football, especially early season college football, is that it's pretty hard to tell which teams are actually any good. An easy example is to look back at last year's FSU game, which was a thrilling win over a team that ended up finishing .500 before the school ran its legendary coach out of town. Pitt looked down right terrible last night. Like, so terrible that they might not make a bowl game. So terrible that Dion Lewis might be able to successfully sue Dave Wannstead for professional malpractice. And yet, 31-3 is a pretty rightful beating of a team that might be that terrible, and as they say, it wasn't even that close. Pitt's offensive line might as well not have existed. In fact, I'm sure the team would be better served to not play with any offensive line at all, just on some 9 wide receivers shit. It's not like the offense can get much worse. And yet, even though the defense might not play a better game this year, they rightfully dominated an offense and offensive line that looks well below average. Even though the game might not have really felt like a true blowout— in the three minutes between Jacory going off with an injury and Pitt muffing a punt, it actually felt like they might have a chance to win the freaking game— I think if you step back, this was a rather encouraging win. The peak has not been reached. At least, that is the hope.
And yet, there's still the nagging feeling that something is off. The right tackle play was atrocious. The running game— excepting sacks and the ill-fated reverse to Kendall Thompkins— averaged exactly 4 yards a carry, which isn't bad necessarily, but is sort of a false measure of success, not that different than the idea that any baseball player that hits .300 is a good player. I'm not sure what's left to say about the interceptions. Jacory might be getting betrayed by his brain or his arm or both— or hell, he might be getting betrayed by Mark Whipple for even being put in the position to mindlessly heave the ball 30 yards down field in the first place— but regardless, they are happening, and it's hard to believe that they'll stop until they actually do. Tight end play is currently nonexistent, and while that may seem superficial in the face of the team's vast receiving talent, Dedrick Epps and Jimmy Graham combined for more catches than any WR in 2009 with the exception of Leonard Hankerson. Combined, they led all receivers in touchdowns. Whipple still seems to lean a bit heavy on the pass. The offensive line has weirdly been a disaster in the redzone. I could go on.
But again, 31-3 is a nice place to be. You have to wonder if the second half last night— lots of rolling out and intermediate passes— provided a new(ish) blueprint for the offense going forward. Excepting his six interceptions (at least two of which arguably were not his fault), Jacory is completing 66% of his passes for just over 11 yards a completion in the last two games, and he seems particularly deadly in the 10-20 yard range. He also threw two pretty perfect deep balls last night. The defense, I believe, is playing above almost everyone's expectations, and it seemed like they tackled better, which I'm told is the main objective of playing defense. I think most people— including myself!— have sort of forgotten that John Lovett exists, but he deserves some praise for how the defense has played so far this season.
So provided that Jacory didn't sprain his shoulder or something last night, let's all try and relax for the next ten days. This team is good, and "very good" and "great" are still very much in play. Let's try and not worry about Death Valley until about two minutes before game time. Also, let's try not to even look at the color orange before that time either, or else we might end up throwing our coffee tables through our TVs by halftime.
--------------
One last thing: I want to address Randy's decision to place an embargo on Jacory as it pertains to the press. Just like Jacory played through immense physical pain last year, I think he'd be more than willing to stay visible in the press as he deals with what is seemingly his first real bout of mental anguish as a Hurricane. He is the face of the program, and there is no changing that, unless we put Schnellenberger's pipe-smoking mug on our helmets, which is something that I obviously endorse. But coaches are coaches for a reason, and if Randy says that Jacory needs a break from being a press darling, then I'm willing to bet that that's been true for a longer time than just recently.

The defense showed up big time. And people will say oh Pitt sucks they only scored 3 points. But Pitt was ranked preseason and picked by a majority to win the Big East. The offense from the first half to the second half was night and day. Penalties were bad. The Oline was bad at times. If the offense gets it’s shit together the season will go well. And I really hate to say it, but besides silly o-line penalties, right now the worst part of the offense is jacory.
agreed

Interesting game.
Great Game! I enjoyed watching Hill play the opposite corner to Harris last night. Hill looked bigger and stronger than DVD has looked since the end of last year and even though the safeties blanketed Bladwin over the top, Hill looked decent running with receivers up the sideline. The rest of the team looked decent in light of the fact that we jumped all over Pitt from the onset of the game.
A couple of negative comments about the game: Travis Benjamin has looked sub par as a receiver this year. He’s had a couple of games where he’s fighting the ball and even after a catch, he dances too much rather than going straight forward. As well with Benjamin, on the first pick of Harris, I found that Benjamin was waiting for the ball to come to him rather than going to get the ball. On the second pick, he stopped his route short because the corner nudged him off the route and decided to jump for it but couldn’t reach the high point. Regarding Benjamin, I know he’s one of the top receivers and out of Hank, A. Johnson, Byrd and himself, he’s considered the deep threat. Regardless, I’d like Streeter to get into some of these games and play meaningful minutes attempting to run down the deep balls and going up for them rather than just playing garbage minutes. If not, have A. Johnson or Byrd run the deeper route and Benjamin run the crossing so Jacory can put some power behind his throw, rather than having to sail it into single coverage in the end zone.
Jacory looked decent today and should have created some more touchdowns in the first half had it not been for Hank dropping a nice ball in the end-zone or the miscommunication with Whipple after the offensive offside. The only poor play he has was when he under-threw Benjamin and the Pitt CB made a great play on the ball. Second last point point; Fig looked off yesterday at RT. Maybe it was his lingering injury or maybe it was the speed rush with no help off the side but something looked off. My question with regards to this is why can’t we give Henderson a shot. I know the coaches want to bring him along slowly but he looks great in those extra TE/OL packages when we need a couple of yards on the ground. Maybe it has to do with his release on passing plays but my assumption would be that his size and quick feet could compensate for any problems he’d have as a freshman. Regardless I expect him to take over for Franklin next year as his size and agility look too good to keep on the bench any longer.
Final point: Why was Nicholas and Ray Ray subbing in and out. I’m an admirer of both but if the safeties are going to make an impact this year and next with regards to a national title run, my belief is that Ray Ray is the man for the job. Even though he’s had a couple of drops on picks the last two weeks, Ray Ray has all of the size, speed, agility and sense to play a great FS and to flip to SS when we need Telemaque to play the deep ball. Not that Jo Jo isn’t decent but he wont be around next year when every game has National Championship implications, so why not keep Ray Ray starting and learning from his mistakes and have Jo Jo be the sub in the second half of blow outs.
Regardless great game by the Canes and I’m glad this non-conference part of the schedule is over with. We need to dominate the ACC this year, go to an Orange Bowl this year and set ourselves up for a great next year. Sorry for ranting and if you read all of this please give feedback. I’m from Canada and nobody can discuss Canes football up here. Go Canes!
I have seen T-3 play live and one thing that is apparent, especially in person, he is a playmaker and wicked fast.
I don’t disagree with Benjamin’s playmaking ability or speed. In fact I think he’s top 3 on the team in both of those categories. I’d just rather him running out of the slot more considering he seems to be better when Harris is leading him into catches rather than having to go up and make a play on the ball. I think A. Johnson, Byrd and Streeter would be ideal for the deep ball considering Harris makes great decisions when throwing the ball into single coverage deep and Benjamin just fails to attack the ball while in the air (at least in the last 2 games). Overall though we obviously have the most talented receiving core in the entire country and the reason its tough to see is because none of the receivers can get into much of a rhythm considering they’re being spelled every other series.. and Yes Sean Spence is ridiculous. I wonder if he stays at OLB because the caching staff likes his tackling ability/ability to run with TE/WR or because they think McCarthy is legitimately a better option at MLB. I’d love to see Spence man the middle with his talents!
It does look like Whipple leans heavy on the pass. BUT we won 31-3 and what QB does not like to throw? That should help with recruiting down the line. I think J12-6 can execute these plays in practice but struggles with them during game time – especially away games – otherwise, why would they call them? He also throws some nice ones too, always has. As for Pitt and pre-season rankings – I don’t put much stock into any rankings until the 4th or 5th game of the season – by then you can kinda tell who is for real and who is struggling. Pitt looked beyond bad.
Sean Spence is a freaking beast!

Defense looks tremendous
Not sure why Miami doesn’t run the ball, play great special teams and great defense. Why go to the turnover machine?
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

I think it’ll take a little more than just running the ball to win football games and as well our WR’s are great talents and need to be utilized in order to open up the run. Jacory is not the biggest problem in turnovers though he contributes to it. He/Whipple give the skill players the opportunities to make plays and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Agreed though, our defence and special teams are top notch and will hopefully lead us to the ACC title game this year.
I thought you had a "no comment" for this place, Bud?

Doesn't seem like I was causing any trouble there...
