Miami LB Ramon Buchanan Out For the Season
With Ray Ray Armstrong returning from suspension, the Miami defense figured to get a boost for this week's game versus Virginia Tech. But with Al Golden's announcement that starting senior OLB Ramon Buchanan is out for the year after suffering a knee injury this past Saturday against Bethune Cookman, it appears as if the injury gods have taken an eye for an eye. Buchanan was injured early in the game during a play near the infield dirt that was still present for Saturday's game, and to that end, Golden had a forceful, if not puzzling response (per Tim Reynolds):
Golden on Buchanan and if infield played role: "Don't even go there. Please. I mean, that's ridiculous. He got hurt on grass, a noncontact injury. That's it. Please. Next question. Next question."
Now, that may be true. Plenty of non-contact injuries have happened on perfectly fine grass. And there isn't a history of major football injuries associated with Sun Life Stadium's infield, involving either the Hurricanes or the Dolphins. But if Buchanan was near or on the infield-- and if Golden shooed the question away so to not cause a stir-- it begs the question of why the Sun Life Stadium crew was not able to patch over the grass, when they have done so many, many times before.
As for Buchanan, he's not a star by any means, but on a Miami defense that is young, inexperienced, and has various players playing out of position, a solid senior starter was almost something to cherish. Buchanan will be replaced by a carousel of players looking to separate from the herd: senior Jordan Futch and freshman Denzel Perryman figure to get most of the looks, with sophomore Kelvin Cain reemerging from hiding and freshman Gionni Paul also likely in the mix. It's possible that Buchanan, who wasn't a huge hitter and didn't have a knack for game-changing plays, may not be missed. But it's also possible that he was more important than anyone realized.

The whole infield dirt thing is still a mystery to me, it was the first thing I noticed there on Saturday. Didn’t the marlins season end on Wednesday?
As for Buchanan, I think it hurts to have another senior off the field. Obviously it’s a bad way to end a senior season. I always thought that he was steady, not spectacular. I think Denzel has looked pretty good in the action that he has seen, and it actually seems like he makes tackles, so maybe it will all work out…
Not looking forward to that Georgia Tech game though.

denzel has looked alright, i hope he plays a lot. him & futch aren’t that far off, and i think it’s better in the long run to get the freshman reps, unless he’s an utter disaster.
as far as the infield goes, i think the reasoning is that they didn’t want to put temporary sod down only to rip it up when they, presumably, re-sod the entire field this week for the rest of the football season. i’m sure that BCC wasn’t deemed an important enough game to temporarily cover the field.
and yeah, georgia tech is probably going to annihilate us. we’ve dominated them for two years running, but i actually think the game would’ve been pretty close last year had tevin washington not been playing in like his second game ever. he missed a lot of reads, but i’ll probably post about that before that game.

We are going to have a hell of a time trying to stop David Wilson this weekend.
Logan Thomas can also effectively run the zone read, which we cannot stop . I predict more of the same from our defense (missed reads, missed tackles, blown coverage, and no push up front). I just hope our offense can put up enough points and sufficiently minimize mistakes to at least keep this one respectable.

the offense is really going to have to score points. the stupid thing is that they are very capable of doing that, but between penalties, interceptions and a poor third down conversion percentage, they score a lot less than they should.
the defense really cannot stop a zone read and i would be really surprised if VT didn’t implement that for this week. but i’m gonna go back and watch that vt-clemson game to figure out how in the hell they only scored three points.

So true
and our run blocking has not been as good as it should be. I did not DVR that VT/Clemson game. Let me know what the tape says.

VT’s offense has not been good. but i have a feeling that our D will make them look better than they are.
