Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Al Golden's Future at Miami

Reasons I believe Al Golden remains coach of Miami and does not take the Penn State job:

  • (Relative) Stability at UM. UM will take a shot on the chin for the Shapiro infractions, however, at least AG and UM have some sense of the threat. President Shalala and AD Eichorst have already made a swift, resolute move to self-impose a bowl ban for this season. More NCAA sanctions are likely to come down but having the current team serve one of the post-season bans will probably be attractive from the perspective of a new recruit.
  • Chaos at PSU. Compare the above to PSU where new allegations pop up daily--allegations that are much more serious than some free drinks and boat rides. There is a leadership vacuum in State College and the current members of the administration are scrambling to protect things much bigger than the football program. It will probably be years before the criminal trial and civil suits are settled.
  • Championships. Thats the word AG repeated at his first presser. Let's say PSU's new prez and acting AD do manage to give AG enough comfort to come to Happy Valley, does AG see a path to the top? Today, PSU has a shot to win the B1G conf championship while UM is 6-5. But UM sits in the middle of one of the country's most fertile recruiting grounds. Also, would you rather your path go through Urban Meyer and Mark D'antonio, or Jimbo and Dabo?
  • One year already in the bank. Like any coach out there, AG is big on his core values and changing the culture of the program. This is a herculean task. I get tired just watching AG talk about it on the youtube videos. The Raising Canes videos give a glimpse of some of the challenges of taking over a program, but it also shows the slow progress made when the new culture is embraced and takes root. Would AG want to start from square one at a new program now that he is finally seeing some of his hard work at UM pay dividends?
  • Al Golden's ultimate ambitions. I don't think AG is a CFB lifer. I think he is more Al Groh than Joe Paterno. I think he would take a shot at the NFL if he had the opportunity. I believe that UM (even with sanctions) is a better launch pad to the NFL than Penn State. Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson, and Butch Davis all went to the NFL from UM (and Howard left UM for the USFL). How many coaches from the Big10 have jumped to the NFL? Does Jim Tressel count?

With all that said, there are two huge areas of concern for me:

  • C.R.E.A.M. Ohio State is rumored to have enticed Urban Meyer with a 7-year $35M deal. That would mark the dawn of a new era of spending in the Big10. Some say Penn State will never join the arms race, especially now with the scandal. But on the other hand this scandal may have them feeling desperate and put them in the position to pull out all stops to get the guy they want. I don't think AG would be offered (nor would he deserve) Urban dollars--that pay-grade comes with two NCs on your resume. But could PSU dangle a comp package worth 1.5 or 2x what he makes at UM?
  • He was a team captain for Pete's sake. As an outsider I would call it a career suicide mission to run into the burning building that is Penn State, but I'd also give credit to AG for having incredible loyalty and a sense of duty to his alma mater.

My hope is that the little dustup with Al's agent was simply the opening salvo to a round of contract negotiations that are still ongoing. Hopefully AG really wants to be at UM and is simply leaving the PSU door open with his comments to retain negotiating leverage until a raise and extension are finalized at UM.

One more note: this is also assuming that Penn State even wants Al Golden. Other commentators have suggested Penn State wants a fresh start with a coach that has no prior ties to the program. "Outsider" names thrown around have included Virginia's Mike London and Harvard's Tim Murphy.

I agree that I don’t see Golden leaving.

I disagree however in that AG is an insider at PSU. Sure, he’s obviously an alum, so has to be considered an insider. But I think PSU would consider him removed far enough from Paterno to pull the trigger. He only spent one year post playing career in Happy Valley, and that was a decade ago. I really feel PSU is going to throw everything they’ve got into bringing him in, once their big name splash says no thanks to 5 years of rapist profile questions.

Golden makes what, $2M estimated?

I just can’t see Penn State giving him more than $2.5M a year. Dropping $3M or higher on a coach from Temple and one near .500 year at Miami esta loco. Muy esta loco. If Mike London can pull off another upset this weekend, he becomes the clear #1, and he’s probably cheaper than Golden.

All signs point to Golden not being the next coach in Happy Valley, except one. His simply wanting to be the next coach, regardless of anything else.

Brady Hoke

How much did Michigan pay him? 3.2M for an unproven San Diego St coach.

If I am PSU, and backed into a corner, money is no object to get the right guy.

Hoke's salary is very back loaded

He is only making $2M this year, of which a mere $200K is base salary. He will make $3.25M per year by the end of the deal with annual increases and incentives.

But I agree with you

If Penn State has AG in their sights, and sees he wants to come back, he only needs the right offer, they are going to find that extra $500K.

re mike london

he reportedly already spurned some overtures http://eye-on-collegefootball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/24156338/33241073

obviously we don’t know if that’s true (and i guess UVA is denying any contact) but that was out there

What about AG's wife?

I would think she has a lot to say about where the family ends up, after having just packed up and moved 1500 miles last year.

The mindset of AG's wife/family is an interesting question

We know very little about them—and that’s probably a good thing. However, I am very curious to know if the family likes Miami and views a move to central Pennsylvania less than enthusiastically. I assume she few up a resident of PA. But in a small town? Or near Philly or Pittsburgh?

Personally, i much prefer city living to small remote town. Its even better when you are comfortable financially. But she is a Penn State alum, too.

If this were an SEC school I bet we’d know not only what kind of car his wife drives, but probably what brand of toothpaste she buys at the store.

just to address this fanpost point by point

first of all, thanks for posting this. my reactions to your points:

(Relative) Stability at UM.

i’m not sure how true this is… i mean there is stability in the sense that he knows that he can have this job through any penalties and probably for a while after that, but we still have no idea what the penalties are going to be, and considering that golden supposedly had no idea about the investigation in the first place, that’s something i’m sure he is concerned about.

Chaos at PSU.

i think lots of people have been misreading this. from a football standpoint, there really isn’t much chaos at PSU. the athletic department will settle itself eventually and though they will have to deal with things related to the sandusky scandal for years to come, next season the football team will pick up where they left off before this whole thing started. i don’t think the ncaa is going to heavily penalize the football program (i think they’re doing a mostly cosmetic “investigation” at the moment) and unless penn state gets sued into bankruptcy the football program should be just fine.

there will certainly be a big spotlight on their next coach, but if that person can guide the team through this and win some championships… well, that person might end up being more revered than even paterno, tbh. the ability to be a savior there must be a huge draw.

Championships.

this is certainly a decent point. that said, penn state isn’t that far away this year from winning a national title, and if clemson and fsu fulfill their potential and v tech stays up and uva comes along… the acc could be as hard as the big 10. that said, i don’t think golden is the type to evaluate what his easiest path to a championship would be. the man took the temple job!

One year already in the bank.

this is a good point, too. that said, penn st won’t be a huge rebuilding job, and while this one year has included a lot of hard work, it still is only one year.

now THAT is some serious Debbie Downer stuff

Because I can’t really argue with what you’ve said here.

I’m just gonna hold on to the notion that Al’s highest ambition is not to be Kirk Ferentz and coach in the big10 his whole life.
