Thoughts on Al Golden

Let me start this off by saying this: any person who says they are a fan of The University of Miami and believes Al Golden should be fired after his first year on the job might as well be in the same group of fans who don't go to the games.

Here's the thing I find so ridiculous about our so called "fanbase." We were great in the 80's, we last were nationally relevant in 2002. Since then, Miami has become medicore at best, and yet, 90% of our fanbase still acts like we have "swagger" (honestly. stop it with that. right. now.), that we should be competing for the title every year, and that anything other than a national championship is unacceptable.

Wake the hell up, people. Cause that is no where near the case right now, and its about to get worse.

Miami found a damn good coach, who does things the right way, who preaches strength, discipline, giving a damn about your team and school first, and earning your spot on the field. On top of that, we found a coach who was willing to sign on long term in the face of one of those most egregious and disgusting NCAA scandals ever (don't bring that Penn St shit in here. its not the same.) Golden's first year was basically doomed from the start. Any big name recruits seemed to disappear once Shannon was fired. He did the best he could, and clearly found quite a few guys in his first class that will be huge. He also inherited a team of guys who only gave a damn about themselves, and went about their game like it was supposed to be given to them with minimal effort. If you disagree with me, just go watch the games the last 4 years. Take a look at some of those juniors and seniors you so revere. Some of the guys who exemplified this mentality transferred before the season started. Unfortunately that didnt happen to all of them. All year theyve been saying "weve bought in" and "were working hard and playing hard for Coach." Yet they go out and play sloppy, undisciplined football almost every week. They killed the team with penalties. They dropped passes. They made stupid, unforced errors. The reality is is that this team was 85% underachievers and 15% kids who actually gave a damn. Look at the play of some of "Golden's Kids", the guys that were fresh to the school and to his system, the guys untouched by the ineptitude of Randy Shannon. Look at Perryman and Chickillo for example. These kids are going to be special. They were out there on every play playing their hearts out, never taking plays off. Meanwhile, you have Travis Benjamin chasing down a punt he should have caught and kicking it against FSU, you have Jacory being late on half his throws, throwing 4 picks against BC. You have senior defensive linemen jumping offsides, and then being topped by senioor offensive linemen drawing false starts. People will say that this team had enough talent that anyone could have won with them. This may be true, but all the talent in the world wont make up for not having the "give a damn" that is needed to perform consistently. My hat goes off to Sean Spence, Lamar Miller, JoJo Nicolas, and the other guys who went out there and played their asses off every game while a lot of their team mates stood and watched.

Were there coaching mistakes along the way? Absolutely. Were they enough to demand this mans head after a 6-6 season? Absolutely not. He did the best he could with the team he was handed, he got them bowl eligible, and he made visible improvements in a lot of areas. He deserves the extension he got, and as a TRUE Miami fan, you should be thrilled that we have someone who has the aura of a guy who can bring the program back to what it used to be. But that sure as hell won't happen after one year, and it sure as hell wasnt going to happen with this group of players. So if you are of the mindset that Golden should be fired, or that we didnt need to give him an extension, or that there was any way in any situation that this group of players was going to be anything but mediocre, then I hope you have fun out there on the sidewalk, because the rest of us fans will be at the games, in front of whatever TVs we can find during games, and cheering on the team we love.

I for one would rather have 100 true fans rather than 10,000 who just want to talk about swagger and throw up the U.

no one is anointing him. at least no one with a brain

but theres also too much blaming of him for the player’s failure. its his first year. 95% of the guys he had to work with spent 3 years in a lax system under Randy Shannon. i dont care how good of a motivator you are, you can only change their work ethic and mentality so much. These guys were treated like royalty from the day they got there, and the sense of entitlement they had was blatantly evident. Golden is going to bring kids in that want to work hard, that want to earn their accolades instead of expecting them to just appear. i for one am thrilled that the “vaunted class of 2008” is finally going or gone. we need more kids like perryman and chickillo, who put in the hard work to earn their starting spots. hell, even seantrel adapted well and earned his spot.

he has a 9 year deal

how many coaches in the ncaa have a 9 year contract? not meyer not saban and not miles. like i said, its possible that he turns it around but after 6-6 and a loss to a BC he really hasnt proven anything to deserve 9 years. that’s what i mean by anointing.

if reports are true, it sounds like the length of the deal

Was more his idea than anyone else’s. If a coach whose name is being thrown around for jobs like PSU comes to you and says “I want to be here long term” you don’t turn him down. He had a 4 year deal before the extension, and considering most people I see want him gone already, that’s “too much”. Based on the improvement I saw in a few of the players, and the improvement in morale, if he wants an extension, you give it to him. Besides, anyone who looks at it and says “shit now we have to have him for that long” is a moron. There’s always a buy out need be.

IMO it appears he had an “out” with Hocutt not telling about the potential for Shapiro gate which garnered the extension. DS didn’t want another black eye with him leaving, sanctions looming etc. I gave him 3 years from the time he was hired to see a noticeable improvement. He deserves at least that. And fwiw – if you are implying that mediocre or less football is what we are being served and we should be happy about that – forget about it. Being from Miami, I did not become a fan of the Canes being 6-6 or 7-5. I became a fan of the Canes because they exuded excellence on the field and gave a very turbluent city in the 80’s something to cheer for. Stayed with them ever since and saw them rise again only to be stifled by a President who does not want the football team to be bigger than the school.Just my $0.02 fwiw

im not at all saying that

im merely saying that is what we have to deal with until Golden tries his hand at improving it. Too many fans expect the team to go 5-7 one year and win it all the next, simply because we are The U. too many fans are hung up on the 80’s and want everything to go back to that. as much as i myself would love it, its not going to happen, and its not realistic. Golden needs the time and players to turn this thing around, and 1 year with Shannons players and suspensions was not going to get it done. He himself has said he wants to be coach long term, that he is committed to Miami regardless of sanctions, so if A) thats the case and B) you owe him SOMETHING for bringing him in blind to the Shapiro scandal, you give him the extension and whatever raise he wants, because what little he has been able to show us has been a hell of a lot better than what we have seen for the past 10 years.

Gotcha

I misinterpreted what you were saying. Yeah Iknow the “We’re Back U Swag” group – although I think they are actually starting to get it now. LOL I guess we are the only 2 on the blog now?

Y'all know I'm always here, too

Plus, I’m probably like the most rational Miami fan ever… to the point of absolute and utter cynicism.

hah. yup.

times like these pretty much breed nothing but cynicism. being tired of average, tired of scandal, tired of randy shannon. but things are getting better. i was worried there for a bit about all the PSU rumors the last few days, but it appears Golden was just up there recruiting. Breakin hearts and takin players.

was wondering where you had gone off to! Look for the transfers in the coming days LOL. I am hearing that the local high school coaches in Miami are fans of AG and he is repairing some of the damaged relationships which is a good thing

Haha... I've been stalking, just not commenting

Glad Golden is mending fences with the local coaches. I hope he can close out with a solid class here.

hes got Duke Johnson

who told a Gator fan who asked him to come to Gainesville “hah ha no way bro” after his 276 yard 4 TD game.

Id say hes recruiting just the type of players we want in Coral Gables

Here's my point:

A) who cares about the length of the deal, or the fact he got an extension. The point is, he’s an in-demand name, he wanted to be there long term, you lock him down. period. not to mention the university owed him something for neglecting to tell him about the investigation. to tell him no and not give him the deal would have basically pushed him out the door.

B) anyone who says he “doesnt deserve” and extension after 1 year with none of his players is just as dumb as someone who says he fully deserved it after the same year. We arent ever going to be the teams from the 80’s again. (STFU uncle luke), and we may never be the 2001/2002 team again, either. we dont have swagger anymore. we are a mediocre program and have been since ’03, even without the pending sanctions. its just fact. only within the last 4 years have we been able to do any decent in-state recruiting.

C) blaming Golden and Golden only for this teams struggles is ludicrous. these same players have performed at this level each of the past 4 years. Golden wasnt going to come in and completely change this team around. is 6-6 embarrassing? not as much as the loss to BC. saying he didnt have the team “prepared” is a joke. watch the film. the team had every chance to win, and was coached the way they needed to be. the players either didnt perform, or they incurred stupid, costly penalties. this season’s wins and losses and solely on the players IMO.
