Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

In Search of Info on DVD

Greetings The 7th Floor! I have traversed the blogosphere from Silver and Black Pride to discuss your former player and our current players, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Richard Gordon. Any information you can offer up will be greatly appreciated as I plan on taking any info you can offer and re-posting on S&BP.

We have read the scouting reports and seen the highlights, but that really paints an incomplete and often contradictory picture. I've always felt the best way to get a real feel for a player is to talk to the people that watch him play in and play out. And that is one of the truly great things about SBN. We all have easy access to this tremendous wealth of information.

So, as I said anything you can share is fantastic. I am specifically curious about the slide of DVD to the nickel package. Is this a guy that is all talent and no football acumen? Did you see any improvements in him throughout his career. Also, the hope is that Richard "Kimbo Slice" Gordon is a pro ready blocker. Do you think that's a possibility?

it's hard to say

DVD has always been a paradox. he’s supremely talented, but he never seemed to find “it”. whether this is poor coaching, immaturity, or the fact that he’s not a good player, only god knows. a decent reference may be Sam Shields, who had a ton of talent, but was mismanaged his entire career and went undrafted last year, only to turn out to be pretty damn good last season for The Packers.

Van Dyke is an athletic beast. Never really developed into a full time starter. Wasn’t consistent. Wouldn’t have been drafted if he didn’t run that blazing 40.

Gordon never emerged as a threat whatsoever. Barely noticed him on the team. Completely surprised he got drafted.

Obviously you’ve heard the Sam Shields story. The coaches at Green Bay said he lacked even basic knowledge of defensive schemes.
So you know that Miami players were not developed to their full potential.
Coachem up, just don’t expect any significant contribution from them other than on Special Teams this year.

Good Luck!

Randy Shannon had a tough time developing that great athletes he recruited. Theres a chance that DVD puts it all together, but judging solely from his time at the U, he wasnt worth a 3rd round pick. In fact, it was a small shock he got drafted at all since he seemed to be a run of the mil backup.

As for Richard Gordon, I have no idea how he managed to even get onto a coaches big board, never mind actually drafted. He literally did next to nothing this year and was probably one of the most unnoticeable players Ive seen playing TE in a while (and thats not just restricted to Miami games either). Quite simply, I doubt he makes your regular season roster.

Have to agree that the Gordon pick was a complete shock, thought maybe he’d get an invite to someone’s camp. His best attribute is his blocking, if the Raiders use a multiple TE system then maybe you can get some good use from him but he will have to earn a spot on the roster.
As for DVD….toss a coin. Until he ran that 40 at the combine he was a borderline prospect. Putting up the fastest time is no joke, but he did not produce or cover from what I saw to be drafted that high. Coach him up and we’ll see if he can overcome the poor player development like Shields, or put him on kickoff returns and see if he can put that speed to another use

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. -- the dude

Hell maybe even flip him to the other side of the ball like Hester and see what happens.
