A Prospective, Post-Shaprio 2011 Miami Depth Chart
The punishments that Miami is facing based on Nevin Shapiro's allegations are months, if not years, down the road. That said, 12 current players are named in Yahoo's story, and most of them are vital to Miami's success in 2011. As I've already noted, the allegations against the Canes players currently on the team are on the mild side of what is included in the totality of the investigation. But, they're also not nothing. Most of the allegations involve shady visits to Shapiro's Biscayne Bay mansion, pool games with cash prizes, and various dinners and parties at clubs while said players were on UM's roster. Using recent precedent— most notably the Ohio State scandal, as well as the A.J. Green incident— I think it's reasonable to assume that the players will be suspended for about half the season. It should be noted that a few players (most notably Ray Ray Armstrong) are implicated with Shapiro during their recruitment, which could bring on harsher penalties for them. What might the Canes starting line up look like minus those players? Well, it wouldn't be pretty, for one. But, let's take a look anyway, shall we?
First things first, here's the full list of current Canes players named in Robinson's story: Ray Ray Armstrong, Travis Benajmin, Dyron Dye, Marcus Forston, Jacory Harris, Aldarius Johnson, JoJo Nicolas, Adewale Ojomo, Marcus Robinson, Sean Spence, Vaughn Telemaque, and Olivier Vernon. Subtracting those players from Miami's starting line up will radically alter what the team is projected to look like. Here's the damage.

Quarterback: Stephen Morris
The supposedly heated quarterback race is effectively over. Morris takes the reigns, which might not be the worst thing in the world, but it leaves Miami one injury away from the return of the Spencer Whipple era.
Running back: Lamar Miller
Maybe the one saving grace in this report is that Miami's potential superstar is not implicated. A small victory, but one nonetheless. The onus on Miller to carry the team to anything resembling success becomes exponentially greater.
Wide receiver: LaRon Byrd / Tommy Streeter
If Benjamin is suspended, Byrd takes over as the clear number one option. After him, the options for the second receiver slot are extremely murky. Tommy Streeter has been impressing in practice recently, but it remains unknown if he's ready to step into a starting role. If Aldarius Johnson is also suspended, that then leaves UM with a whole host of unproven talent, most notably Phillip Dorsett, Allen Hurns and Kendal Thompkins. Not pretty, so Streeter gets the nod.
Tight end: Blake Ayles / Chase Ford
Miami's tight end situation remains untouched. Ayles is likely entrenched, the second spot may be up for grabs.
Offensive line: Jermaine Johnson / Brandon Linder / Tyler Horn / Harland Gunn / Brandon Washington
The offensive line also remains intact. The projection of Johnson as well as both guards is a bit of speculation, but I think it's what we'll be seeing in College Park. This line now truly becomes Miami's backbone, and it will be crucial for them to help the team establish a running game that takes the pressure off of its depleted passing game.

Defensive line: Olsen Pierre / Darius Smith / Micanor Regis / Anthony Chickillo
With the subtractions of Ojomo, Forston, Robinson and Vernon, Miami's defensive line is absolutely decimated. The defensive end position is a complete mystery, and becomes in serious danger of being almost nonexistent. The leading returning veteran would be Andrew Smith, but I don't think that the current staff sees him as an every down end. That leaves Pierre, who has long been a favorite of the staff, and Chickilo, Miami's top incoming recruit. Losing Forston would be a massive blow, and I think the run-stuffing Smith steps in front of Curtis Porter, who is reportedly injured anyway.
Linebacker: Jimmy Gaines / Jordan Futch / Ramon Buchanan
Losing Spence throws the already tenuous linebacker situation in flux. Buchanan remains on the outside, and I think initially the team would move current starting MLB Gaines outside and insert Futch, a senior, into the middle. I wouldn't be surprised if at any point, including to start the season, Gaines moves back to the middle and Spence's spot is filled by a rotation of incoming freshmen: Eddie Johnson, Gionni Paul and Denzel Perryman.
Cornerback: Brandon McGee / Michael Williams
Losing Nicolas opens up the corner spot that he had all but locked down. Everything aside from that was fluid, but I'd expect Miami to opt for experience in McGee and Williams, the Wake Forest transfer. There will also be a heavy dosage of Thomas Finnie, and it would not be a surprise to see him take the spot opposite McGee. Lee Chambers and Dallas Crawford would also likely be in the mix.
Safety: Alonzo Highsmith / Kacy Rodgers
With the loss of both Armstrong and Telemaque, Miami might be the first team to ever contemplate not playing any safeties. Right now, Highsmith is listed as a back up alongside Andrew Swasey, the walk-on son of strength coach Andreu Swasey. It's quite possible that the coaching staff would give Swasey the nod, but I'm willing to bet that they'd be unwilling to take that leap. In my estimation, that leaves a few players that were recently moved off of the position: Rodgers and Eduardo Clements. Considering that Armstrong and Telemaque are thought to be the best safety tandem in the conference, it makes sense that the more talented back ups would be moved to positions of greater need, but that would need to be reversed now. In my estimation, Rodgers would get the nod over Clements, mainly because he worked at the position last season.
All in all, this is looks exceedingly grim. Time to drink up.

I'm being naive, but
as far as the allegations against the current players, it seems like for most of them the allegations are basically Shapiro saying they were there and then some phone records that say ‘text message’. That really proves nothing and I’m not sure how the NCAA is going to find out if the players were actually there unless they admit to it. Also, I hope the world ends today.
Is there really a legitimate claim for the Death Penalty?

Dont forget
The postseason bowl ban. I’m thinking 4 years. A post season ban is essentially the death penalty lite, because kids want to play for championships unless they REALLY love the school. I love The U, but they dont have the recent pattern of success that allowed Southern Cal to keep a lot of their players following their smackdown by the NCAA
Transfers
will be a big factor in how far we fall. Our committents will run, and we can’t blame them. But the current uninvolved players that abandon ship will sink us. Good bye Chickillo 3rd, we will root for your success. (me go cry now)

Going off of precedent
SMU had the athletic department DEEPLY involved, and they were a repeat violator when they got the penalty. Alabama could have gotten it a few years back cuz they were a repeat violator too. But Miami hasn’t had major problems (or been caught I should say) for many many years. So a death penalty would be a little extreme
i think that you could make a case that there is, or that there isn’t.

Technically, yes...
Death Penalty can only be applied to repeat violators.
Repeat violator status is when a school commits penalties either while on probation or within 5 years of the end of a probationary period. Last probation ended in 2005, therefore anything before 2011 is eligible.
Probably is not receipts, witness, and the person committing the violations telling all (despite his poor reputation).
yes that is where we stand out Shapiro is a a jilted lover saying " you dumped me, take that" while doing time for bilking people. W-E. I say we give them some sacrificial lambs, game suspensions and move ON.
Maybe we can just throw the basketball team under the bus since Haith and his staff seemed to be heavily involved.

Well I think Lil Madoff hopes that it causes the demise of the athletic program at the school, people to burn an effigy of Shalala etc. I think there will be suspensions for current players if they find anything and get around to it this year – the NCAA is anything but fast. ANd honestly I think the school started its own investigation when this popped up last year although Lil Madoff would not comply. I would like to think that Shalala has a very good legal and compliance team.
I've been stabbed in the eye
If the landscape of college football stays the way it is, then we will be buried for quite a while. These allegations are surreal, wide ranging and seem to go way up the foodchain.
So, let’s lead the charge and break away from the NCAA. Extend an invitation to USC to co-lead, Kiffen would undoubtedly be on board

WHAT!
If you leave who would honestly follow? I know for UM it almost seems right, but that’s more anger than commonsense. It’s just not logical for the university. Do you understand what the ramifications would be? Cause it’s not as simple as it sounds. UM would have zero athletics until the 4 super-conferences brake away from the lesser schools. In which case it would most likely leave Miami with no option except back into the NCAA or even FCS. I would take the punishment and use the time to build a fan base, stadium, and proper financial footing to run the sports programs….how to do that is what you should ask. This is not the end of the U…but it does mean the U will be irrelevant for at least 6-7 years. As a Nole fan I hate to see this happen. I will miss our rivalry.

Unfortunately...
Being a Seminoles fan, not in the state of Florida (or the U.S. for that matter), I grew up on the national coverage of our games against Miami and Florida, and It REALLY sucks that this is all happening. I think the rivalry between FSU/Miami is extremely intense, but I don’t feel the same hate for you guys as I do for the gates. I can at least watch the Canes play a ball game and hope they smash someone up good.
Here’s hoping they don’t completely bury you guys. Our games were just starting to get really exciting again.
The only limitation a man faces, is the one he imposes on himself.
No death penalty
There is too much money tied up into TV contracts. Besides, a 4 year bowl ban and a loss of say, 80 scholarships over 4 seasons would be akin to a death penalty anyway. After the boondoggle that was Shannon’s last few recruiting classes and the overwhelming quantity/underwhelming quality of this year’s class, 2012-2013 were looking UGLY already. To be honest, I wouldn’t be shocked if Lil Luke took a look at the depth chart and gave one final gift to the U from prison, the gift of an excuse. It’s a crying shame to see this happen to the University of Miami. Shalala has been wonderful for that school, essentially revamping every department, one by one and raising the overall standing to #47 in the U.S. News and World Report and somehow I feel like people will remember this fiasco longer. As much as I can’t stand the vast majority of “HuRRiCaNE $waG Da U BACK” fans I meet, I can tell you as a student at UM that the student body, alumni base and University are class acts all the way and the football players I have in classes are great guys. Essentially what I’m asking is, if this had to happen, why couldn’t this have happened to UF instead?

Let me rephrase that
Didn’t mean to say all UM fans are ignorant, the ignorant fans are just the loudest.

True dat. Shalala has been great for the school – the athletic departments not so much. Football and baseball nowhere near what they used to be since she got there. LOL please do not call him Lil Luke – he gave himself that name no matter what he says. I think Lil Madoff took a look at the depth chart from prison and wanted to eliminate the seniors, if anything.
Thanks for this analysis
And as an OSU fan, have a beer on me. It’ll get worse before it gets better, but it’ll get better. I just wish dickheads like Shapiro would realize that fans like us are here cheering these teams long after those guys have left the program. It really sucks when stuff like this happens, and fans are left holding the bag.
And I know nothing about Stephen Harris, and you allude that it might be better to go with him anyway. What’s your take on him?

Important Miami Analysis
This is an important analysis of the allegations against the Miami Hurricanes: http://allabouttheu.wordpress.com/2011/08/18/renegade-reporter-spells-out-litany-of-accusations-while-often-failing-to-substantiate-his-claims/
