On The Radar: What's Next For Cane's Recruiting?

The past week has been a whirlwind for the Hurricanes when it comes to recruiting. There was some heartbreak as well as some elation. While the Under Armour All American Game was a wash for us fans, the Army All American Game more than made up for it. The Canes came away with 4 recruits, three of which are 4 star kids, and one of which was already committed to Virginia Tech. Saturday was a monster day, and moved the Canes' class up to 6th nationally according to Rivals.com. Now that the dust has settled, one has to wonder what's next? Where will Golden and Co. go from here? Read on after the jump to get a look at just some of the kids that are still in the mix to join this years class.

Star-divide

In the vein of nabbing recruits from other schools, we start off with two kids who are currently committed to in-conference rivals but are seriously considering the Canes. The first is a 3 star CB who as of now is committed to Georgia Tech, but says that after the events of this weekend he will be visiting Miami. Antonio Crawford (Player Profile) has said that its not 100% official he will visit the Canes, but that he is going to talk about it with his coach. He says that he got an offer after the Canes coaches saw him cover UM commit Malcolm Lewis during state championships. He runs a 4.4 40 and would help out almost immediately if he decides to switch allegiances. The second guy that is currently committed, and may be a bit of a tougher flip is 4 star safety P.J. Williams (Player Profile). He is currently committed to FSU, but has said that he is considering the Hurricanes. He is a soft verbal to FSU right now, but has stated that he will visit them on Jan. 14th, and if that goes well, then he will be locked up with them. If that visit does not go as well as planned, then the door will be open for the Canes and USF. Obviously with our depth at safety, any help is good help, and the added sting of stealing a recruit from FSU would be great.

There are a couple of offensive linemen that are very much on the Miami radar. The first is 4 star OT Avery Young (Player Profile), who as of yet has not announced a choice. It has been reported that he has narrowed his choices down to Georgia, Florida and Auburn, but he will be visiting Miami on January 20th. He has said that this will be a very serious trip, and will determine if Miami creeps into his final choices. He is from Palm Beach Gardens, and would be a huge addition to the OL group if he commits. The second lineman is a 3 star kid out of New Jersey, Ryan Brodie (Player Profile). He has listed Miami as one of his potential choices, and will visit the Canes in the last week of January. He is getting heavy pressure from Rutgers and UConn, but Miami is a serious contender due to him knowing Golden well from his days at Temple. The Canes have a great shot at landing this kid, so hopefully his visit goes well enough to convince him to come down south.

There are a couple of guys on the radar to help out in the defensive backfield, which has thinned a bit after last year. First up, we have DJ Abnar (Player Profile) who is listed by Rivals as an athlete, but played DB in high school. A 3 star kid out of Tallahassee, he has said that he is hoping for an offer from the Canes, and has a huge advantage in getting one thanks to his cousin, Duke Johnson. He is a bit on the shorter side, standing only 5'8", but has the speed to make up for it. The next kid is currently unranked/unevaluated by Rivals, and is about the same size as Abnar (5'10", 170), but runs a 4.34 40 (think Devin Hester fast). CB DaCarlos Renfro (Player Profile), out of Orange, Texas has said that if the Canes offer, he will commit on the spot. Currently his most high profile offers are from Memphis and Iowa State, and he is serious about those schools, so lets see what happens.

The last two players are wide receivers, one is hopeful for a Cane offer, and the other is much more high profile and already has an offer. JUCO WR Alex Wheat (Player Profile) had a big freshman season, and has the interest of the Canes' coaching staff. His transcripts are in, and he is working on setting up a visit to Miami. He is a big kid, standing 6'5" and weighing in at 210, so his size would be a great addition to the speedy WR group we have now. The last guy I will mention is by no means a sure thing, but Miami is at least in the ballpark for him. The nation's number one recruit according to Rivals, Dorial Green-Beckham (Player Profile), has been targeted by what seems like every major school in the country, and will good reason. He has been compared to Andre Johnson, which is high enough praise for anyone. He stands 6'6" and weighs in at 220, yet runs a 4.43 forty, which is just stupid. Miami has offered him, and they have briefly spent time in some of his many top choices. He has not really tipped anyone off as to who he is leaning towards, or who his favorites are, but the general consensus is that he will end up in the SEC. This, however, does not mean that there is not at least some slight sliver of hope. The sports world will be watching when he announces, which could take a while a la Terrel Pryor. Miami may not end up near the top of his final list, but with Golden and his team of recruiters behind him, who knows at this point.

These are at least some of the kids that the coaches still have on their horizons when it comes to recruiting. Some will end up Canes, others will not, and you have to think that the current list of commitments will be a bit different when it is all said and done as well. Who knows what the final haul will be, and who will be in it, but I hope that this at least gives you a clearer picture of what we may be looking at when national signing day comes and goes.

GO CANES!

I just wonder how many more kids

Golden is allowed to sign. According to Rivals we already have 30 commits, and the annual limit of kids you can sign is supposed to be 25. Of our 30 commits, I think we are anticipating around 8 early enrollees. Early enrollees count against last year’s class, which makes me think we have room for 3 more commits? This could def get dicey if a few of the kids we don’t expect to commit surprise us on signing day.

You have to factor in the schollys that opened up with all the kids leaving

Other than that, I’m not entirely clear on how it works.

Didn't realize the early entrants opened up spots

over the 25-signee cap. Didn’t think about the academics either; it seems like we have a few kids that end up in prep school every year. Thanks for the input fellas.

i get the sense

a few of the guys committed will not qualify academically and/or end up elsewhere. i trust that golden is doing his due diligence since some of these “verbals” are shaky to begin with.

from what i know

at least 1 of the guys currently committed may have a grades issue, and there are a few others who are setting up other visits, and may end up elsewhere. its a bit early to worry about scholarship limits, simply because the class is still relatively fluid at the moment. Golden’s name has never been linked to any sort of oversigning that i am aware of, so i am sure they are recruiting with their limits and numbers in mind, also keeping possible decommits and grade issues in the back of their heads as well.
