Canes stun Hokies, advance to first ACC tourney Semifinals

For the second time in as many days, the 12th-seeded Miami Hurricanes dispatched a top-5-seeded ACC foe, this time with a 70-65 victory over the fourth-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies. In doing so the Miami Hurricanes did what no other Hurricane team has done before - won 2 games in the ACC tournament. After finishing in the basement of the ACC, the baby Canes gave Frank Haith his second 20-win season, certainly a bright spot amongst a once-optimistic season turned sour.

The Hokies maintained a slim lead for most of the second half, but freshman G Durand Scott exploded down the stretch, scoring baskets to keep the Canes even and knocking down clutch free throws to give the Canes the lead for good and to ice the game. Miami did an outstanding job locking down Tech point guard Malcolm Delaney, the leading scorer in the ACC, holding him to 7 points on a dismal 3 of 15 points from the field. Delaney had a chance to give the Hokies the lead in the final minute, but he misfired on a pair of shots inside of 12 feet.

The Canes will take on Duke, who stopped Virginia 57-46 in the first quarterfinal, tomorrow at 1:30 pm in the first ACC Semifinal matchup. The Blue Devils defeated the Canes 81-74 at the BankUnited Center on February 17 in the schools' only meeting this year.

College Baseball 2010 - Starts on Feb 19

A new college baseball season starts today. There are a few interesting series for this weekend. We start with the best series No.3 Virginia @ No.16 East Carolina. The Cavaliers have great hopes for this year. They had a great run at the College World Series back in 2009. This year should be even better for them. This first match should be an indicator to see if last year run was not just a team that got hot late in the season.

The University of Miami Hurricanes open this season with a home series against Rutgers. The Canes are ranked @ No.12. There are several questions surrounding this team. They lost several offensive weapons from last year. They do get back Eric Erickson who was out all year due to injuries. He starts tonight for the Canes. This would be a good test to see how well he has recovered.

One comical side note: UM's sports info office made a tiny mistake when it sent out a press release regarding its Save Haiti campaign. It read: "In future games, the Hurricanes will be sporting a patch on their uniforms in support of Save Haith Saturday..." We know they meant Save Haiti. But it was still funny. UM sent a correction shortly afterward.

After Graig Cooper's knee injury in the Champs Sports Bowl, talk was that he would sit out next season, get a redshirt and return to UM in 2011. But Cooper's father, Tino Thomas, said the surgically repaired injury was less serious than feared, doctors are optimistic, and Cooper believes he will be ready to start the 2010 season.

I've just heard from other fans who are usually spot on with their inside knowlege (even though I don't know where they get it) saying to expect him and a few more big time recruits yet to come. The Canes kick off Game 20 at Maryland which will be the first meeting this season between the two teams. Maryland (currently tied for first in the ACC at 13-5 for the season and 3-1 in conference play) is coming off a significant win over NC State 88-64. Miami is currently 1-4 in conference play and 15-4 overall and in last place. With their sluggish starts at Virginia Tech and Virginia and inability to close out Boston College at home, look for the Canes to have their hands full with the Terps. If the Canes cannot control Landon Milbourne and Greivas Vasquez and play sloppy undisciplined basketball this could get ugly quick - although surprisingly the Terps are 1-4 against Frank Haith the past 3 years. The Canes are going to need their Seniors, Dwayne Collins, Adrian Thomas and James Dews to step it up.

Just when we thought it was safe to watch TV again and I was thinking we would at least be spared until April's draft. Leading by 17 points after the half, the Canes struggled to score in the second half with just 24 points scored with two minutes to go. Unlike the two slow starts on the road at Virginia Tech and Virginia, Miami started fast, only to fade in the second half at home. Trailing 74-71 with 0:59 to go, Frank Haith called a time out to rally his team but defensively Miami was unable to stop Reggie Jackson (who averages 13 points a game) was able to get by Julian Gamble and score making it 76-71. A late basket by Durand Scott made it 76-73 but BC was able to get to the free throw lane and cement their lead. February is looking like a really long month

The Canes will look to shake off a two game losing streak suffered in the State of Virginia against the Hokies (81 – 66) and Cavaliers (75 – 57) OUCH. This will be the second time the Canes square off against the Eagles after losing to them 61-60 on December 9, 2009 in Boston. Look for Malcolm Grant to have a big game against them again (18 points previously) and for Canes to improve their rebounding (46-21 in favor of BC).

"I don't believe what I just saw," was the phrase I kept saying to myself after the bowl game. What can I say, Jacory Harris was flat-out horrible yesterday. Besides the fact the he could not make completions, he just kept getting beat down by their defensive line. Sure you can blame our offensive line, but after watching the game again, I noticed that more than half the time, it was Jacory's fault that he got sacked. But the one thing that really pissed me off to my core was that Jacory could not execute a winning drive after Matt Bosher kicked one of the most perfect onside kicks I have ever seen in m entire life. I hate to say it because I love UM, but the game was lost in the hands of Jacory Harris.

Other than what I had to say, I truly can not wait until next season when all of our star players are experienced and they will play with a chip on their shoulders.

If we lose this bleeping bowl game to Wisconsin and Mike Leach gets fired from Texas Tech, can we please get Leach to be our head coach and fire Shannon's ass (although, I'd offer him the defensive coordinator position). Jeez! This is pathetic! We're way better than this! We are probably the top 5 most talented teams in all of the country and yet we're still making the same mistakes. At some point, it's not a youth issue anymore. They've been playing for two full seasons together now! At some point you gotta start blaming the coach. That's all I gotta say.
